Dear Write to Know: If the two watch repair places mentioned to L.L., Sandwich, in last Sunday's column cannot fix the antique pocket watch, I would highly recommend Ken Kotoski of Yellowstone Watch, Inc. I have had a number of pocket watches from the 1880s and 1890s repaired by him, and have always been very satisfied.

He is a little pricey, but he does top-notch work and guarantees it. He will also check out a watch and provide an estimate before doing any repairs, so the only thing L.L. stands to lose is the postage to send the watch to him. I just wanted to let you know what a great job you did with my Seiko SKX007, the one you performed a complete overhaul on in addition to changing the hands and adding a saphire crystal.

I waited a few weeks before contacting you because I wanted to wear the watch and track the timekeeping rate.

I am thrilled to report that after the first few days of slightly erratic timekeeping (but nothing drastic), it now has run for 2 weeks straight with a ± 0 error, yes that's "0" as in ZERO! I am truly astonished by this and consider you to be a genius.

I got my watch today and I just wanted to thank Ken and yourself for fixing my watch! I know I may seem a little excited, and I am. I really like this watch and I have missed having it. I may send my other one (I have two of them) and have it for a back up. I got my first one in the Virgin Islands many years ago on a company sponsored trip. I got many complements on how it looks and it always kept superb time and was told by International Diamonds and Gold (where I bought my second one) that they couldn’t be fixed and that I would have to buy a new one. I recieved my watch to day in the mail in good order. I am very pleased with the quality of workmanship that was accomplished for the repair of this time piece. I got this watch in the early 1980's when I was working in Malaysia and it hasn't looked this good or worked this well since I first aquired the watch. Although the repair price was the price of a new comparable model Seiko, I have no doubt that THIS watch is in as good as, or better condition than a new one. I have no regrets about the cost of repair.

Who ever said "Man with one watch always knows what time it is, man with two watches is never sure.", didn't have a Ken Kotoski repaired watch.

Subject: Bucherer Watch

I got the watch and I can't begin to tell you how happy I am. Of course it looks fantastic, but now the performance matches the looks. Even when it was new this 33 year old Bucherer was never this accurate. I have had it for a few days and it is matching my kinetic (which you also made much better) second for second. This is the watch I took to the Bucherer repair shop repeatedly when new to get it to not drift by several minutes a day. So much for officially certified chronometer and Swiss craftsmanship. I prefer to have Yellowstone do the work and make it better!

Dear Ken,

Thank you for fixing my wife's two Seiko Kinetic watches. When her first Seiko Kinetic stopped working, I paid my local jeweler about $125. The watch ran for a week. My local jeweler said that Seiko stopped making women's kinetics because of the high failure rate and that I ought to give up on it. He said there was nothing more he could do.

I then bought an identical "new" one for my wife at the Seiko outlet store. It was the last one they had. It died after two weeks. I was out the purchase price for both watches and the failed repair.

You brought both watches back to life after they had been sitting in a drawer for over two years. They both work better than when they were new. I wish I had known earlier about your expertise with Seiko Kinetic watches. Thanks so much.

My Grandfather's Gruen watch looks pretty good! Thanks! I've got another one that needs some work. It's an Elgin "Sportsman" and says "waterproof" on the back. I don't think it's in as bad a shape as the Gruen. The crystal is cracked, it needs a new stem, and the case needs some work. I think it's a manual wind but I can't get it to wind, so it might be quartz. Can you help?

I am speechless. In my mailbox on Saturday was a box from you. With a level of excitement that I have not felt since childhood Christmas I opened the box. As my watch came out of the black velvet pouch I was completely stunned. I could not believe this was the same watch I sent you. The watch I sent had a corroded face, bent hands and a crystal taped on with bits of old yellow tape. This watch was beautiful; the face perfect, the hands straight and the movement as smooth as the day I first opened it over 33 years ago. I still can't take my eyes off of it. I would just like to tell you that my watch has been back here for a couple of weeks now and it works great. I don't think it worked this well even when I first bought it..

I have a very old Seiko that I received 35 years ago that still works and when it comes time I'll be sure to look you up again to request that you service it also.
